Angelica, Eliza and Peggy-The Hamilton Reviews

Angelica, Eliza and Peggy-The Hamilton Reviews

We all know the story of Angelica, Eliza and Peggy Schuyler from their amazing song and scenes in the renowned Broadway show, Hamilton, but did you know they weren't the only Schuyler children? Or about the close relationship between Hamilton and Peggy that wasn't shown in the distinguished musical?

In this first article of The Hamilton Reviews, I'll tell you all about the real, accurate history of our favourite Schuyler Sisters.

1. Peggy and Hamilton's Close Relationship

Although this wasn't displayed in the show, Margarita "Peggy" Schuyler and Hamilton had a close (platonic) relationship. In fact, Hamilton was at Peggy's deathbed when she died. L.M. Elliot also wrote a book purely about the Peggy-Hamilton relationship. He writes that Hamilton was very much of a 'knowing big brother' to Peggy, who he calls 'a strong-willed and vivacious sister'.

2. There were FIVE Schuyler children-not three!

Remember when Angelica says 'My father has no sons'? He actually did! Angelica, Eliza and Peggy were three amongst five children (The two left out of the show being Philip Jeremiah Schuyler and Catherine Van Rensselaer Cochran.) However, none of these two other siblings weren't mentioned for the purpose of shortening the length of the show. In fact, Angelica wasn't even supposed to be in the show, until Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote "Satisfied".

3. Angelica really had chemistry with Alexander Hamilton!

Although their affair was never proven, Angelica and Hamilton had some real chemistry which everyone could see. Why was the affair never proven? According to different sources, the letters between the two were never found. (Perhaps Eliza Schuyler burned them *wink wink*).

4. Eliza and Alexander Hamilton had children other than Philip.

The other six (yes, six) children of Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Hamilton must've hated it when they saw that only their oldest brother made the cut!

The other six children were Angelica Hamilton, James Alexander Hamilton, Eliza Hamilton Holly, Alexander Hamilton Jr., William S. Hamilton, John Church Hamilton. However, Lin-Manuel Miranda has not released the reason why he didn't add the rest of the children, but we assume he wanted to shorten the musical, or he didn't want to hire other cast members.

5. No, Alexander and Eliza did not really meet at the 'Helpless' ball.

In the musical, it is portrayed as if Alexander and Eliza first met at the ball, but they actually met two years before. By the start of the ball, they had been writing letters and exchanging correspondence. They had already had a romantic relationship, and Angelica even really wanted to form a harem, having fallen for Alexander as well.

That's all for the first edition of The Hamilton Reviews! I hope you enjoyed it! The next part will be about crazy Hamilton facts! I'll see you guys soon!
